SPACE Release: Thrilling New Crime Drama in January

Thrilling New Crime Drama RIPPER STREET Slices Into the SPACE Lineup Beginning January 19 at 9 p.m. ET!

The series stars BAFTA Award-winner Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn, Adam Rothenberg, Myanna Buring, and David Dawson.

Toronto (December 13, 2012) – Suspense. Mystery. Murder. Following the gruesome aftermath of history’s most notorious serial killer, Jack The Ripper, the new eight-episode drama RIPPER STREET joins SPACE’s roster of phenomenal programming beginning Saturday, Jan. 19 at 9 p.m. ET. Set in the East End of London as it moves into the last decade of the 19th century, RIPPER STREET stars BAFTA Award-winner Matthew Macfadyen (The Three Musketeers, Pride & Prejudice) as Inspector Edmund Reid, the leader of H Division police precinct, which is charged with maintaining order in the blood-stained London streets.

It’s April 1889, six months since the last Jack The Ripper killing, and East London is emerging into a fragile peace, hopeful that the killer’s reign of terror might at last have run its course. Haunted by the failure to catch London’s most evil killer, forward-thinking detective Inspector Edmund Reid (Macfadyen) is now in charge of H Division, based in the toughest district of Whitechapel. Accompanied by loyal local brawn including Detective Sergeant Bennett Drake (Jerome Flynn, GAME OF THRONES), and U.S. Army surgeon and one-time Pinkerton detective Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg, THE EX LIST), Reid seeks to bring justice to a world that is forever on the brink of mayhem.

The men of H Division hunted a maniac and failed to find him. Responsible for policing a relatively small area of just 1¼ square miles, into that space was packed some 67,000 people – a seething, bustling mass of the poor and dispossessed. RIPPER STREET is a fictionalized trek into the heart of a London borough living in the aftermath of the forever anonymous killer, and the dedicated policemen for whom life, and crime, go on.

In the premiere episode of RIPPER STREET, “I Need Light,” a young woman is found brutally murdered with the hallmark signs of the Ripper upon her. One-time H Division boss Chief Inspector Frederick Abberline (Clive Russell, CORONATION STREET) believes it is the return of Jack The Ripper, but Detective Reid suspects a different evil is at work.

RIPPER STREET also stars Myanna Buring (The Twilight Saga) and David Dawson (SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL), and is produced for the BBC by Tiger Aspect Productions, Lookout Point, and BBC AMERICA. Executive Producers are Greg Brenman (ROBIN HOOD), and Will Gould (MURPHY’S LAW) at Tiger Aspect, and Simon Vaughan (COMBAT HOSPITAL) at Lookout Point. RIPPER STREET is distributed by BBC Worldwide.
